It’s the holidays! Time for friends, family and plenty of fun. Parties and get-togethers, food and drink. And, as most of us already know, way too many opportunities for hangovers.
A holiday season hangover can ruin your spirits, leaving you with a pounding headache and heaving stomach. It’s all too easy to overindulge when you’re busy chatting with friends or having a great time with family – or maybe a not-so-great time.
But you don’t have to let a hangover drag you down and keep you from that next party. Here are a few tips on how to overcome a hangover and bounce back in time to win the ugly sweater contest.
Be Patient and Rest
Before we dive into some of the other tips, it’s important to note that the only thing that can really sober you up or get rid of a bad hangover is time – so, if you find yourself a few drinks too many into the night, your best bet at feeling better is to head to bed.
Get some rest and be kind to your body. Sleep can help with the headaches and grogginess that typically accompany a hangover. Using sleep in conjunction with some of the other treatments we will look at can certainly get you back on your feet!
Replenish Your Body With the Right Foods
We all know what the typical hangover cravings are – greasy, heavy foods. Fried fast food, junk food and salty snacks. But the most important thing to do when facing a hangover is to feed your body the right things.
When you’re drinking heavily, you tend to become dehydrated more quickly. Along with the loss of fluids (which we’ll look at in a moment,) you’re also losing crucial minerals called electrolytes. Losing electrolytes can lead to sluggishness, muscle cramps and general fatigue.
One of the biggest electrolytes you lose is potassium. Replenish your body’s supply with some potassium heavy foods like bananas, avocados and cantaloupes. Bananas are a great morning-after snack, since their smooth texture and bland flavor are unlikely to induce nausea. If you like avocado, consider a piece of toast spread with mashed avocado as a breakfast option.
In general, eating bland, light food is a better option for a hangover than heavy, hard-to-digest or greasy foods. Stick with cereals that are not sugary. Eating greasy breakfast food or fast food will likely only make your stomach ache worse. If you are suffering from nausea, ginger – whether through tea or crystallized ginger – is a great way to naturally settle your stomach.
If you typically drink coffee in the morning, you should probably have your regular mug as long as you don’t think it’ll make your nausea worse. A hangover headache coupled with caffeine withdrawal is not fun!
Keep Yourself Hydrated – or Rehydrated!
Hydration is the other side of the replenishing coin. You lose electrolytes and your body is struggling to process the alcohol – but one of the biggest causes of bad hangover symptoms is dehydration. If possible, it’s best to drink plenty of water before you go out to a party, or drink a glass of water for every alcoholic beverage you consume. If you forget, then here’s what to do.
Drink Water & Electrolyte Drinks
Drink water. Lots of it. This will not only help get your body rehydrated, but it will also flush toxins and lingering alcohol from your system. However, when you’re hungover you’ve also lost electrolytes and sodium – so opt to consume things that are electrolyte-rich. Electrolyte-enriched water like smartwater is a great option, as are bone broths and coconut water.
It’s probably best to avoid sugary sports drinks, since your body doesn’t need to be dealing with the dyes and sweeteners in them. Another benefit of electrolyte-rich drinks is you won’t need as much of them in order to get rehydrated, which is great if your stomach is unsettled.
